The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of role-playing focused emotion management training for schizophrenia patients on their emotional expression and interpersonal relationship. Schizophrenic patients have many problems in interpersonal relationships due to the severe dysfunctions of emotional regulations. Yongin-Emotion Management Training(Y-EMT) for schizophrenic patients have showed their efficacy in areas of interpersonal competence, empathy and quality of life. Yet, many research findings were based on self-reported measures. In addition, utilization of Y-EMT for day hospital patients was not enough for their active emotional experiences because of the only 5 sessions of inactive interpersonal training. As a staff practitioner, this researcher found out that a role-playing training was to be effective to improve emotional expressions and interpersonal functioning. Based on behavioral rehearsal and shaping, role-playing focused Y-EMT conducted for the subjects. The subjects for this training are patients with schizophrenic in Daegu S Hospital Day Hospital. 10 subjects were in the experimental group, and the matched 10 subjects were in control group. The experimental group had 16 sessions during two months (twice a week of 50 minutes). Self-rating scales which measures changes in interpersonal relationships and emotional expression scales were administered. This measure was also administered for the 3rd party assessment by the family care-giver and case manage worker for each subjects. All the outcome measures of the self-report, family care-giver and social worker in experimental group showed significant changes compared to control group. Finally, the limitations of this study as well as suggestions for future research were discussed.
